Low Carbon/ Sustainable

Bettridge Special School, Cheltenham

M & E design for new 100 place special needs school for Gloucestershire County Council. The building, designed by Hunters, has been fully modelled on IES Dynamic Simulation software and is naturally ventilated with a biomass wood pellet boiler as the main heat source. The building has solar collectors and is fully sprinklered. Pope Consulting advised on the warm water pool. Opened Jan 2010.

Gillingstool and New Siblands Schools, Thornbury

Gillingstool Primary School shares this new build site in Thornbury with New Siblands Primary School, a special needs school, to provide an inclusive educational community. Pope Consulting undertook the first M & E design with biomass boilers and advised on the warm water pool and lifts. We designed all M & E services for the New Siblands Secondary School, also providing for special needs, with a new teaching block and refurbished existing buildings for specialist curricula.

St Andrews CE Primary School, Steyning

Design of all M & E services for this West Sussex County Council naturally ventilated building with exemplary daylighting levels.

Crofton School Resource Provision Centre, Gosport

Pope Consulting worked closely with Hampshire County Architects to fully design the mechanical and electrical services, in the new resource centre for Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder at Crofton School.

The design included natural ventilation with night cooling, rainwater harvesting & bat friendly lighting.

Panacea Medical Centre, Worthing

Pope Consulting provided strategic advice and performance specifications for the conversion of the former United Reform Church in Shelley Road to this specialist eye polyclinic. There was sufficient height in the main structure to accommodate new 1st and 2nd floors. These are divided into offices and consulting rooms and there is an operating suite and recovery room for minor procedures.

A full height atrium at the front of the building retains the aspect of the tall, stained glass windows and a small chapel at the rear showcases the original carvings and windows at the altar end. Feature brickwork and the original timber roof structure appear in many of the rooms.

The building has heat recovery ventilation, air source heat pump heating and cooling and low energy lighting.

Pope Consulting entered this project for the 2013 Acumen Business Law Commercial Property Awards and it won the Best Refurbishment category.

Wiston House Biomass Boiler, Steyning

Design and project management of new containerised 150kW woodchip boiler and fuel store with associated works. Wiston House is a Grade 1 listed building operated by Wilton Park, an executive branch of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Pope Consulting were also appointed Planning Supervisor. The plant has been running since September 2007.

Bracklesham Barn, Bracklesham

Handed over Feb 2011, Bracklesham Barn provides community facilities for Bracklesham and East Wittering. The new building is designed by RJCA Architects for Chichester District Council and has ground source heat pumps, solar thermal collectors and natural ventilation to reduce carbon emissions. The building achieves BREEAM Very Good.

Private House, Chichester

Contemporary, timber-clad marine residence for a private client. The house is highly insulated and is heated by a ground source heat pump, supplemented by a gas-fired boiler. Pope Consulting undertook thermal dynamic modelling and designed M & E services.

East Pallant House, Chichester

Pope Consulting Ltd, working with HNW Architects, was appointed to design low energy services for the extension and refurbishment of Chichester District council's offices.

The new accommodation has air source heating and cooling with heat recovery ventilation.

A 3.6kW array of solar panels on the refurbished roof provide electrical power.

Chapel at Graylingwell Park

Pope Consulting has designed a new heating installation for this Victorian Chapel on the Graylingwell Park estate. Commissioned by Linden Homes, the heating runs from the Park's Low Zero Carbon district heating scheme. The Chapel is used by Chichester's Immanuel Church.

The Clock House, Graylingwell Park, Chichester

Five new dwellings in the former hospital Administration building, designed by Gillespie Yunnie Architects with detailing by HNW Architects for Linden Homes. The site is LZC and buildings are served by a low carbon energy centre and district heating.

Beach Hotel Development, Worthing

Design of M & E services for new £8m Premier Inn 81 bed hotel together with 44 seafront sustainable flats designed to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 on the site of the old Beach Hotel, Worthing. Opened December 2015.

Edgbarrow School 6th Form Centre, Crowthorne

Pope Consulting was appointed by Bracknell Forest Council for a new 16 class building for this Business and Enterprise College. The building has natural ventilation, ground source heat pumps and solar thermal collectors. Pope Consulting provided thermal dynamic modelling and the building is rated BREEAM Very Good.

The Avenue School and Centre, Reading

Following a competitive selection process, Pope Consulting Ltd was appointed as part of a design team by Reading Borough Council to complete feasibility studies and outline design for this £19m project. The project was briefed as a 60 pupil special educational needs school with office accommodation for Council staff and a Council training centre.

Thermal dynamic modelling was undertaken using IES Virtual Environment software to confirm thermal loads and natural ventilation and daylighting strategies.

The building employs 2 90kW ground source heat pumps for primary energy, using deep boreholes for the ground loops. Natural crossflow and stack ventilation has been used wherever possible to meet sustainability criteria.

Solar thermal collectors are mounted on the roof and contribute to the domestic hot water service. Five 1kW wind generators have been installed on the 2nd floor rooftop. A mini-CHP (Combined Heat and Power) provides a continuous 5.5kWe and 12.5kWth to the building and pool. This building has a fully pumped sprinkler installation served from tank storage. Carbon savings are reported to an intranet as a learning resource.

It was officially opened in Jan 2010 by the Countess of Wessex.

Arun Civic Centre, Littlehampton

Various projects for the Arun District Council offices, including upgrading of the LPHW heating and Council Chamber cooling feasibility study. We have also designed a rainwater harvesting scheme for the building and designed the services for the refurbishment of the Main Lobby Reception and Interview Rooms including a gas-fired VRF system.

Sandwell Valley Crematorium, West Bromwich

Modelling and design of M&E services for this new building. Working with Martin Critchell Architects, the Chapel is naturally ventilated by a combination of mid-level and high level opening louvres in the cupola and the complex is heated by waste heat recovery from the mercury abatement process.

Lighting is provided by low energy LED luminaires and all lighting was modelled on Relux software.

Boddington Gardens, Acton

Pope Consulting designed all MEP services for this new build pavilion. Working for constructors, Claude Fenton Ltd, we were tasked with satisfying the stringent London Plan standards for carbon reduction. This was achieved by ensuring a passive low energy design together with significant photovoltaic and solar thermal arrays. The building has extensive changing facilities together wth a social room and kitchen and is now run by the Actonians Sports Club.

Whipsnade Zoo Visitors Centre

Pope Consulting was appointed by design/build constructors, Fordingbridge PLC, to design sustainable M & E services for this iconic new building. The building is heated by air source heat pumps linked to underfloor heating and uses passive natural ventilation with actuated high level windows. LED luminaires are used for display and general lighting. We carried out extensive lighting and thermal dynamic modelling of the building.

Westgate Leisure Centre, Chichester

Chichester District Council appointed Pope Consulting Ltd to undertake the design and project management of new plant at the Westgate Leisure Centre in Chichester. The existing single boiler plant had no redundancy when the CHP plant failed and we designed and tendered the installation of two new 395kW fuly modulating condensing gas boilers, linked into the Centre's energy loop. The Centre's domestic hot water was also upgraded. We subsequently drafted tender documentation for the replacement of the Centre's combined heat and power (CHP) installations and advised on tender evaluation.
